Native American art at auction

The engine that starts SKIN OF THE WOLF — starts the plot, in any case — is an auction of Native American artifacts at Sotheby’s in New York City.  This is a controversial issue, because many Indian nations identify as sacred objects the items that collectors buy as art.  The U.S. has re-patriation laws and some Indian nations, particularly the Hopi, have been successful in stopping auctions of particular pieces.

So what’s Sotheby’s response?  They move the auctions to France, where the U.S. re-patriation laws don’t apply.

The first murder in SKIN OF THE WOLF takes place at Sotheby’s.  Just sayin’.
